Fire Breaks Out Again At Serum Institute Building Hours After 5 Die

The Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine maker, is spread over 100 acres in Pune.

A massive blaze left five people dead on Thursday at vaccine-maker Serum Institute's Pune facility, at a building that is under construction. A second fire broke out hours later and was brought under control.

It is unlikely to hit the production of Covishield, the coronavirus vaccine developed by the SII in partnership with the Oxford University and British-Swedish pharma firm AstraZeneca.

A massive fire broke out at Terminal 1 gate of Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune on Thursday afternoon. A total of five people lost their lives in the incident, while four others were evacuated from the building in the SII's Manjari premises.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths caused by the fire incident. "Anguished by the loss of lives due to an unfortunate fire at Serum Institute of India. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest," PM Modi tweeted
